Luke Bryan honored Lionel Richie at the Kennedy Center Honors by performing a pair of his songs as he watched on from the crowd. Bryan’s performance was a two-song medley of Richie’s hits beginning with “Penny Lover” and the Commodores’ 1979 hit “Sail On.” Bryan previously sang “Penny Lover,” a single from Richie’s Grammy-winning 1984 album Can’t Slow Down, at the 2016 Grammy Awards. In addition to Richie and LL Cool J, other honorees for the night included singer-songwriter Gloria Estefan, TV icon Norman Lear, and dancer-choreographer Carmen de Lavallade. Originally held on December 3, the event was filmed for a television special that aired on CBS on December 26. Both Bryan and Richie will serve as judges on the upcoming ABC reboot of American Idol.
