Black Eyed Peas co-founder will.i.am will deliver the commencement speech for the first batch of students graduating from the Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy for Arts, Technology, and the Business of Innovation at the University of Southern California next month. Erica Muhl, dean and founding executive director of the USC program, said the Academy invited the Los Angeles native because he “personifies the spirit of cross-disciplinary innovation and creativity, which is the essence of the Academy.”. will.i.am, who is appearing as a coach on the U.K. version of The Voice, was chosen as a speaker by the academy, in recognition of his work as a musician, entrepreneur and philanthropist. Digital music pioneers and record producers Iovine and Young (Dr. Dre) endowed the academy in 2013 with a $70 million gift to USC, which was used to start a unique bachelor of science of arts, technology and the business of innovation course.
