Janet Jackson was honored with the Icon Award at the Billboard Music Awards over the weekend. The 52 year-old singer becomes the first African American female artist to receive the prestigious honor. Janet Jackson made her stance on the #MeToo movement clear as she spoke after accepting the Icon Award. “At long last, women have made it clear that we will no longer be controlled, manipulated, or abused. I stand with those women and with those men equally outraged by discrimination, who support us in heart and mind,” said the youngest member of the Jackson family. She also performed a vibrant and high-energy mix of “Nasty,” “If” and “Throb.” Music greats such as Prince, Jennifer Lopez, and Cher have previously won the high honor, established in 2011.
