John Mellencamp has won the Woody Guthrie Prize. The Tulsa, Oklahoma-based Woodie Guthrie Center announced the award on Wednesday. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member will be presented with the award on August 30. The Woody Guthrie Center said in a press release that Mellencamp “has used his artistic gifts to spread a positive message of hope, equality and freedom.” The prize, given annually, recognizes an artist who best exemplifies the spirit and life work of folk singer Woody Guthrie by speaking for the less fortunate and serving as a positive force for social change. The Indiana native is the fifth recipient of the award. His predecessors are Norman Lear, Kris Kristofferson, Mavis Staples and Pete Seeger. In honor of the singer, the Woody Guthrie Center will organize an exhibition featuring “Mellencamp” memorablia. Copyright(c) 2018 RTTNews.com. All Rights ReservedLess «
