Lindsey Buckingham filed a lawsuit against Fleetwood Mac in Los Angeles Superior Court earlier this week. He is suing for breach of fiduciary duty and breach of oral contract, among other claims. Buckingham also alleges that he would have been paid at least $12 million through a deal with Live Nation for the band’s current tour. “This action is necessary to enforce Buckingham’s right to share in the economic opportunities he is entitled to as a member of the partnership created to operate the business of Fleetwood Mac,” according to the complaint. The guitarist recently discussed the circumstances that led to his firing or departure from Fleetwood Mac with Rolling Stone. On April 9, Fleetwood Mac confirmed that the band was parting ways with longtime guitarist Buckingham and replacing him with Mike Campbell of The Heartbreakers and Neil Finn of Crowded House. According to Buckingham, the issue started two days after Fleetwood Mac’s performance at a MusicCares benefit in New York City on January 26. The band’s manager Irving Azoff called Buckingham to talk about a number of issues Stevie Nicks had with his behavior at the event. Nicks felt Buckingham was disrespectful of her and smirked when she gave a thank-you speech. About the smirking part, Buckingham says, “The irony is that we have this standing joke that Stevie, when she talks, goes on a long time. I may or may not have smirked. But I look over and Christine and Mick are doing the waltz behind her as a joke.” Buckingham says he assumed that Nicks was quitting Fleetwood Mac. He even wrote an e-mail to Fleetwood assuring the drummer that the group could continue without Nicks, but he didn’t receive any reply. A couple of days later, Buckingham says, “I called Irving and said, ‘This feels funny. Is Stevie leaving the band, or am I getting kicked out?’?” Azoff told the guitarist he was “getting ousted” as Nicks gave the rest of the band “an ultimatum: Either you go or she’s gonna go.” In April, Fleetwood Mac announced a major North American tour with two new guitarists Finn and Campbell, while Buckingham has also began a solo tour.
