Typically, the Super Bowl’s halftime performers attend a press conference just days before the big game. However, this year Maroon 5 wont be conducting one. “Maroon 5 has been working hard on a Pepsi Super Bowl LIII Halftime Show that will meet and exceed the standards of this event,” the NFL said in a statement. “As it is about music, the artists will let their show do the talking as they prepare to take the stage this Sunday.” “Starting with the Pepsi Super Bowl LIII Halftime Show announcement, we began cross-platform rollout of behind-the-scenes footage and content from each of the halftime performers,” the league added. “Instead of hosting a press conference, this social and digital media rollout will continue through Sunday across our owned and operated media assets as well as through the platforms of the artists.” Many consider the cancellation of the press conference as a move to avoid direct questions about the band’s involvement with the halftime show. Maroon 5 have been severely criticized for agreeing to perform at the halftime show largely due to the NFL’s stance on players taking a knee during the national anthem. Early this month, the NFL confirmed that Maroon 5 will play at halftime of Super Bowl LIII, along with “Sicko Mode” rapper Travis Scott and Big Boi. The 2019 Super Bowl will take place on February 3 at the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick created controversy in 2016 after he started kneeling during the national anthem in protest of racial inequality in the U.S. Several A-list artists, including Rihanna, Adele, Jay-Z, and Cardi B, rejected invitations to perform at halftime to show their support for Kaepernick.
