Gladys Knight is set to sing the national anthem at Super Bowl LIII, the NFL announced on Thursday. “I am proud to use my voice to unite and represent our country in my hometown of Atlanta,” Knight said in a statement. The Super Bowl will take place on February 3 at the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. Knight has won seven Grammy Awards and is also a Rock & Roll Hall of Famer. The Empress of Soul has also garnered two No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 singles, “Midnight Train to Georgia” and “That’s What Friends Are For.” Last year, Pink sang the anthem, while country star Luke Bryan did the honors in 2017. Meanwhile, Maroon 5 have been tapped to play at the halftime of this year’s Super Bowl. “Sicko Mode” rapper Travis Scott and Big Boi will also perform alongside Maroon 5 during the halftime show. Scott, along with the other performers, faced criticism from fans who have asked to them to support Colin Kaepernick, the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback who started the #TakeAKnee movement to protest racial injustice. Several A-list artists, including Rihanna, Adele, JAY-Z and Cardi B, reportedly rejected the invitation to perform at halftime to show their support with Kaepernick. Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Kaepernick created controversy in 2016 after he started kneeling during the national anthem in protest of racial inequality in the U.S. Copyright(c) 2019 RTTNews.com.
