Pop star Lady Gaga took home her very first Oscar at the 2019 Academy Awards held on Sunday, February 24. “Shallow,” Gaga’s Grammy-winning song from A Star Is Born won the Oscar for Best Original Song, beating fellow contenders, “All the Stars,” from Black Panther, “I’ll Fight,” from RBG, “The Place Where Lost Things Go,” from Mary Poppins Returns and “When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings,” from The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. Gaga was tearful as she made a moving acceptance speech, in which she thanked her family and friends. She also expressed her sincere gratitude to her co-star and director, Bradley Cooper, saying “there is not a single person on the planet that could’ve sang this song with me but you.” “And, if you’re at home, and you’re sitting on your couch, and you are watching this right now, all I have to say is that this is hard work,” Gaga continued, addressing millions of viewers worldwide. “If you have a dream, fight for it. There’s a discipline for passion and it’s not about how many times you get rejected…it’s about how many times you stand up and are brave and you keep on going. Thank you,” she concluded.
