Pop star Miley Cyrus received a wave of backlash for posting a series of pictures of herself perched upon the branches of a Joshua Tree inside Joshua Tree National Park in Southern California. The protected species of trees is unique in its shape and structure and is fiercely safeguarded by the locals of the Mojave Desert. “Joshua trees are a unique part of our natural heritage and they don’t grow anywhere else on Earth…they’re an important part of the ecosystem,” said Madena Asbell, Director of Plant Conservation Programs of the Mojave Desert Land Trust. While many of Cyrus’s fans have been rather blunt in their harsh criticism of her poorly thought out action, others have taken the time to write carefully-worded arguments for treating the Joshua Trees with gentleness, care and respect in an attempt to educate the young star. “You look beautiful, as always, in these photos, however they are sending the message to countless others that this is ok to do. We must be the voice and stewards of our planet and all its precious creatures and plant life.
