In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Joan Baez discussed the new protest movements in the wake of the Trump presidency. The activist drew parallels to today’s protests and those of the 1960s. She also spoke to the importance of music in unifying a movement. In reflecting upon protests Baez attended in the 1960s and how they compared to the ones of today, the folk singer seemed impressed by the number of youth in the movement. The activist commented, “I was struck by how many really young people [attended]. When I look back at the civil rights and peace movements, was it really this young?” When asked about the importance of music in the protests movement, Baez explained how fundamental its presence is. The singer stated, “It’s terribly important, because that’s what keeps the spirit. Carping and shouting, as much as it gets stuff off your chest in front of 100,000, you really need something uplifting. That’s hard to do in a speech if you’re angry.” Copyright(c) 2017 RTTNews.com.
