Sting has strongly criticized world leaders for their failure to solve the refugee crisis, calling them “half men and cowards.” Reuters quotes Sting as saying, “the family separation policy was brutal and barbaric.” Following an international outcry, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order last week, ending his policy of separating migrant children from their parents, who were caught trying to enter the US illegally. However, according to reports, more than 2,000 children are yet to be reunited with their families. Speaking at an Amnesty International event in Athens on Saturday, Sting lauded Greece for showing the way to deal with refugees. “You have shown how to treat refugees when other people are building walls. When children are being taken from their mothers and put in cages, you are acting with compassion and generosity and commonsense,” he said. On Sunday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel played down expectations of a breakthrough during talks among EU leaders on the migration dispute. Earlier, on Saturday, Austrian Vice Chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache said he expects a chain reaction across the European Union if Germany closes its borders to refugees.
