Michael Jackson’s estate has urged HBO not to air a documentary about the king of pop, arguing the film has violated journalistic ethics and norms. Leaving Neverland, directed by Dan Reed, is set to broadcast next month. Reed’s film follows two men, Wade Robson and James Safechuck, who allege that they were sexually abused by the music legend when they were children. In a ten-page letter sent to HBO CEO Richard Plepler, Jackson’s estate described the documentary as “a one-sided sensationalist program” and “disgraceful.” “As you must know, contrary to all norms of documentary filmmaking, the Estate was never contacted by the supposed ‘documentarian,’ Dan Reed (or anyone else associated with the program) to provide the Estate’s views on, and responses to, the absolutely false claims that are the subject matter of the program,” Jackson’s estate wrote. The letter adds, “Likewise, no one else who might offer evidence to contradict the program’s premise was consulted either, as Dan Reed has publicly admitted.” Meanwhile, Michael Jackson’s nephew Taj Jackson is raising funds to release a documentary series that will expose “media and showbiz corruption” against his uncle.
