Iconic band R.E.M has protested the use of the band’s hit track “Everybody Hurts” for a pro-President Donald Trump meme. Earlier this Friday, Trump tweeted out a video that shows his recent State of the Union address with sad-looking reaction shots of lawmakers including Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Kamala Harris and R.E.M.’s 1993 hit “Everybody Hurts” playing in the background. “World Leader PRETEND!!! Congress, Media-ghost this faker!!! Love, R.E.M.,” R.E.M.’s official twitter account tweeted in response. R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills said in a tweet tagging the Twitter user who created the video, “By the way, go [expletive] yourselves.” He later added, “Measures have been taken to stop it,” tagging Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey. “You need to get on this.” The video was created and credited by a watermark with the Twitter handle @CarpeDonktum, whose user bio said, “I tweet and meme in support of Donald Trump.” However, the clip posted from Trump’s account has since been removed from Twitter.
