The ABC singing competition’s season ended Sunday, announcing its newest winner: Just Sam. The 21-year-old singer from Harlem beat out other finalists Julia Gargano, Arthur Gunn, Dillon James, Louis Knight, Francisco Martin and Jonny West.
“No one more deserving of this life-changing experience,” Luke Bryan, a judge on the show, tweeted. “Congratulations @CoJustsam. We love you #AmericanIdol @AmericanIdol.”
Gunn was the runner-up.
“American Idol” was one of the many live TV shows that decided to postpone or cancel hosting audiences, in order to curb the spread of COVID-19.
Contestants were sent home at the Top 20 phase because of the coronavirus pandemic, making this season unlike any other.
“#AmericanIdol continues to wish everyone health and safety,” a press release regarding the move stated. “For the first time in competition show history, #AmericanIdol has broadcasted a full remote episode from over 40 locations, with all contestant performances shot on iPhones.”
ABC recently rebooted “American Idol” in 2018 after ending its 15-season run on Fox in 2016. This concluded its third season since its reboot.
